There is a gym on nearly every corner in London and I feel like I’ve been in most of them.  After a while they all begin to feel alike–uninspiring. Especially disturbing are those with that supermarket-like quality that just murders your passion for fitness.

You know them… They have a weights section…cardio area…gym floor…and you move from one area to the next in the same zombie-like fashion you do as you make your way down a supermarket aisle.

Sounds familiar? The good news is that there are fun classes you can try to get your passion for fitness back. Here are the ones personal trainers in London, Los Angeles, Australia and the Gold Coast recommend:

Barre

Barre classes have a barre (you can thank me for that word changing fact later) and is the perfect class for former dancers or women who want a dancer’s physique.  It mixes ballet, yoga and Pilates, and is described by Sadie Lincoln, founder of barre3 fitness, as ‘isometric strength training.’

Cool right?   So, you can imagine how hot your rig will be doing that once or twice a week!

 

Bollywood

Remember the ‘JAI HOOO’ song we all fell in love from ‘Slum Dog Millionaire’?  When it was popular you couldn’t go into a bar in London without being presented with an opportunity to learn some Bollywood moves for free.  If only I had…I could have experienced one of the most uplifting, exhilarating workouts sooner.  Bollywood is not only great fun, its high energy makes it a great way to get some cardio in.

Crossfit

Crossfit is a mix of cardio, weightlifting, and gymnastics. It’s purpose is to train our bodies to MOVE using all our muscles.  I won’t lie. I hated CrossFit when I first tried it. Hated it! I worked in a gym that focused on this type of functional training (e.g tires, ropes, lifting, jumping) and really had to push myself to keep up.

It’s an amazing all-round workout, so it wasn’t too long before I noticed how strong it made me feel and became hooked.  It’s now one of my favourites and a favourite of athletes too!

 

Aerial Yoga

As you can see from the photo, bringing a bad day into your anti-gravity yoga class is pretty impossible.  It’s not just fun, but Bill Davis, director of group fitness for The Athletic Club in Ontario Canada reckons it is a MUST if you spend a lot of time behind a desk.  “It’s better than an inversion table [for your back], says Davis. “It gives you the chance to hang freely, allowing your spine to lengthen.”

And you get to know what life for spiders is like.

 

Pole Dancing

This is a class you and I have got to try. I have met so many amazing women who pole dance in their spare time and LOVE IT!  Mostly I hear how confident it makes them feel.  It isn’t just amazing for our outsides, it gives our bones and joints a lot of love too.

Yes, it’s got a reputation for being risque…but watch this video from the International Pole Championship and tell me you don’t agree that pole dancing can be a classy hobby too.

SoulCycle

Check out this CBS video for a behind the scenes look at the mind body class that’s made cycling classes popular again. SoulCycles are more than a fun way to work your core, they have a community-like atmosphere and Zen-inducing vibe that make you want to keep going.

 

Adventure-Competitions and Runs

Although they’re not classes, adventure-based runs like Dirty Girl and Colour Run are a blast to train for and to experience. Tooted as “the happiest 5K run on the planet,” hundreds of thousands participated in over 300 Color Run events in more than 50 countries last year.  Check out their website to see if they’re coming your way this summer.

I don’t know about you but putting together this piece has inspired me; I’m definitely going to try out a new class this week.
