Hello everyone doing the home detox. Hope you’re enjoying tossing all your unwanted stuff. If you’re not, here’s a good way to think about it: Days from now when you sit back with a glass of iced tea (or wine) and look at your sparkling rooms and closets, you’ll be happy you did the work.

And as you live in a more organized space, I know you’ll appreciate how energetic you feel from having less stuff around you.

WEEK 2 OF THE HOME DETOX

We’re now ready to organize and set up a system that will last. The Kon-Mari how-tos will show you how to fold your basics,

STORAGE TIPS:

 1. KEEP LIKE THINGS TOGETHERmarie-kondo-organize-by-subject_1180x810

2. LEAVE 20% FREE

Leave 15- 20% of your storage space free. Cramped cupboards, shelves, and drawers cause you to stress to find what you need and it encourages clutter.

3. GET CREATIVE WHEN YOU ORGANIZE

The more thought you put into how it looks, the more thoughtful you will be in keeping things organized. Color coding, Beauty has a way of helping us

About storage containers

A point on which we disagree with Marie is containers. We’re huge fans and containers to organize groups of things. A toothbrush holder is an organizer and you have to agree that your brushes look better in on that just sitting on the sink. Boxes, bins, baskets, hooks, etc. will help you to keep like items together, make some items portable and keep you organized.

Organizing is about freeing up time so you can stress less and enjoy your life more.  It’s one of those simple life hacks that we all know works because we’ve felt the effects of both cluttered and organized spaces.

Best organizing tip

Marie recommends TOUCHING your things and instead of thinking of what you want to/should get rid of, think of what you want to keep. She encourages us to decide based on what sparks joy when you touch it. That is such freaking brilliant advice.

How to keep clutter under control

  • HAVE A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING.
  • AS A GENERAL RULE, GET RID OF ONE THING WHEN YOU ADD SOMETHING NEW.
  • ORGANIZE STORAGE BEAUTIFULLY.
  • DO MINI CLEANING & SPOT-CHECKS EVERY 4-6 WEEKS.

When you’re done with this detox, it would be lovely to have a dinner party or to have company over. It’s a great way to reveal your new home and get feedback. Your friends and family’s praise will serve as even more motivation to keep it up.

E-N-J-O-Y your new healthier lighter homes when you’re done.
